Motorists overpaid by more than €4 million on purchases through unofficial websites

NDS regularly warns motorists about intermediary websites through which motorway vignettes can be purchased. These sites typically charge substantially more for a motorway vignette through various handling fees. Although this type of intermediation is legal and operates in all European countries, motorists pay more in practice without receiving any additional service. On the contrary, it can complicate the complaints process and, above all, means sharing personal data with operators that are often anonymous.

NDS compared the five most commonly used intermediary websites through which motorway vignettes can be purchased. Its findings for 2025 show that motorists paid more than €4.5 million extra in service fees alone, charged by these websites for their services. On average, the service fee was around €6 for a 1-day motorway vignette; motorists paid an average of €9 extra for a 10-day vignette, €11 for a 30-day vignette and as much as €19 extra for a 365-day motorway vignette.

More than one million motorway vignettes were sold through the monitored intermediary websites in 2025, with 10-day motorway vignettes proving the most popular: almost 560,000 were sold.

In addition to paying extra for a motorway vignette, motorists should note that these fees are the intermediary’s net income and therefore cannot be invested in Slovak motorway infrastructure. Buying a vignette through anonymous intermediary portals can also make matters considerably more difficult when making a complaint, as in many cases the buyer does not receive proof of purchase directly from NDS.

“We continue to urge motorists to buy motorway vignettes exclusively through official points of sale. This ensures they obtain a valid vignette safely and at the lowest price,” said Peter Braška, Director of Tolling and IT at NDS. Motorway vignettes can still be purchased via the website www.eznamka.sk, the eZnamka app, or at information and sales points at border crossings; prices remain unchanged. Dozens of Slovenská pošta branches have also recently joined the network of physical sales outlets.

Since NDS took direct responsibility for the e-vignette sales system two years ago, it has introduced several improvements. These include a new 1-day motorway vignette, a redesigned website and expanded payment options through Apple Pay and Google Pay, significantly improving customer convenience.
